BROWN SHAVER CHICKS AVAILABLE NOW - 2 weeks old.

These chicks hatched out 2nd February 2012.  Each week we raise them will add a dollar onto the $10 week old chick price. These pullets will come into the lay around 18 to 20 weeks. They will be 18 weeks old on 7th June.

Chicks will need to be kept warm in a brooder box with a warm area (heat lamp or a light bulb or heat plate) where they can sleep and a cooler area they can feed and drink. Until they are pretty much feathered up they will need to be kept indoors or in a shed. Once feathered they can go out into a chicken coop and start having access to free range. Happy to give advice on set up and can help out with the essentials like wood shavings, chick drinker, feeder, heat source etc.

This is a great way to get started with the heritage breeds! If you don't own an incubator purchasing day old chicks is a good way to go. Also ideal if you wish to select dual purpose breeds as you can keep the girls as your future layers and grow on the cockerels for the pot! Nothing beats home grown, nutritious, free range chicken.

From time to time we have available purebred chicks from our heritage breeds up to 7 days in age. These chicks are sold unsexed. Price is per chick. Pick up is essential as we have no way of sending these cuties in the post or with the courier!  Breed choice depends on availability and this varies from week to week as to what eggs have been set in the incubator three weeks previous. It takes 21 days from egg to chicken!

August/Sept/Oct/November is the best time to get chicks if you want the pullets to come into the lay late summer/autumn.Chicks hatched out December/Jan onwards will come into lay either late winter or early spring.

We have available this season a breeding group of ringneck pheasants.

The group onsists of a two year old cock with 6 x two year old hens. All in great condition and are now finishing their second season of lay. All very quiet, friendly birds and would be perfect for someone wanting birds for a large home flight or for release on a lifestyle block. Pick up preferred. POA.

The perfect automatic nylon bowl drinker with 4L capacity. Will work with either low pressure or towns water pressure. Bowl fits into a plywood stand at the perfect height for poultry. Bowl can be easily lifted out for cleaning. A low maintenance set up that ensures your poultry have access to water whenever they need it. Another great idea is to save the rain water off the roof of the hen house.This can easily be done by investing in a 200L drum to store the water. With minimal cost this can be set up to  run the water to the automatic bowl drinker.

Quality plastic chick drinker perfect for day old chicks. Simple press fit onto the base.  Made from high quality UV stabilised plastic for long life. Keeps water clean for young chicks and helps prevent any accidental drownings.

Quality plastic drinker with straight sides so birds do not have to duck under the buldge as in other designs. We find these are the best design to use and the easiest to fill. The bowl  is also wider allowing more drinking space. Made from high quality UV stabilised plastic for long life. More suitable for larger birds but we do use them for our young pullets from around 6 weeks of age. We also have this size available with 3 sturdy, extendable legs.

For top egg production it is worth providing your birds with oystershell grit especially if they are not fully fed on a commercial diet. We feed out Westons Peak Layers to our laying birds and the calcium levels in this commercial feed is adequate for eggs production with sound shells.
However for those birds that are in enclosed runs and do not have access to large areas of free range we provide shellgrit separately. We fill a small potting container secured by a wire stake in the ground (so the birds don't knock it over!) The grit also aids digestion in the crop as well as the intake of calcium.

We have been so impressed with these bantam step on feeders that we have now put one in each of our pekin bantam pens. The pekins have taken to them quickly (little birds with high IQ's!!) We are saving on feed as the sparrows just don't get the opportunity to help themselves any longer. An excellent step-on feeder perfect for bantam sized chooks. PLUS we have been using them in our pheasant flights and they have been working well with the ringnecks and ornmental pheasants.  This unit holds app. 4kgs of feed.  The whole unit is made out of aluminum with alloy rivets, plated steel hinges, nuts and bolts so it keeps working in adverse weather.

Ideal trough for feeding young chicks. Fill up with high protein chick crumble and slide over the cover. The cover has holes in it to allow the chicks to feed without soiling and wasting the feed.

We are delighted with our buff sussex and have found them to be excellent layers of light brown eggs – infact they would rate as one of our best layers! This colour variety of the Sussex has been work in progress for us for some years now - we started out with birds that had poor fertility and hatchability and we are delighted to now have excellent fertility and hatchability this season and the prodeny is looking great too. In the heavy breeds we have the barred plymouth rocks, light and buff sussex, barnevelders, wyandottes (blue laced, gold laced, buff laced and white), rhode island reds, dorkings and faverolle. We courier eggs using the POSTHASTE two day service. Eggs will be couriered on mondays /tuesdays allowing for ample time for delivery prior to the weekend to avoid parcels sitting in depots!  Courier to city address is app. $15 for up to 2 dozen eggs. Courier to rural address is app. $20 and takes an extra day. Please let me know if you are RURAL - as it makes a difference to delivery time and carries a surcharge. Pick up most welcome...we are in the Brightwater area. As there are many variables for incubating eggs and their transportation to you we cannot guarantee fertility and hatch rate. 100% refined food grade fresh water Diatomaceous Earth (DE) with less than 0.1%Crystalline Silica. For use against Redmite and external parasites (lice, fleas,bedbugs etc) and for the general good health of your animals and for residual control of mite in housing and bedding.

Here at Appletons we use Poultry Shield and Diatomeaceous Earth together to keep control of the red mite. We recommend first treating the house with Poultry Shield then when dry applying the D.E. on perches and in nestbox bedding and if required the floor litter.
Puff into all the corners, joints around the house, perches, nest boxes. You need to do this once then repeat around 5 days later just in case you missed them or mite eggs have hatched, as the breeding cycle of a mite from egg to breeding is around 7 days. Diatom is 100% Organic, Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth. It is a 100% natural product for maximum control works best used in conjunction with Poultry Shield.
Diatomaceous Earth  also known as diatomite or kieselgur, is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that is easily crumbled into a powder. This powder has an abrasive feel, similar to pumice powder, and is very light, due to its high porosity. Diatomaceous Earth consists of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae.

How it works
Diatom is a 100% Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth for use against red mite and external parasites (lice, fleas, bedbugs etc) and for the general good health of your animals.

Diatom can also be used on all birds and pets for the control of lice, fleas etc and for residual control of lice in housing and bedding. Just dust on your bird in between the feathers. The powder scratches the mites waxy shell causing it to slowly dehydrate and die. The Diatom scrapes the body of the insect causing a loss of fluid. An insect does not have blood vessels. They have a shell that is semi-porous, more or less like unglazed porcelian. In order to keep their body fluids from evapourating through their shells they have a waxy coating on the outside. Once the protective waxy coating is gone the insects slowly dehydrate.

Pack of 10 disposable 3 ply ear-loop face masks.

Ideal for when you are cleaning out the fowl house. Chicken dander and dust can be a real irritant to the lungs and it is advisable to wear a face mask when cleaning out or working in your hen house. We have found these masks to be easy to wear and very effective.They are nose bar adaptable, have a high filtration capacity, are close fitting, have a low resistance to breathing (lets you breath easily!) and are hypoallergenic. There are four great features that separate Bekina boots from all others in the market.

Comfort
The reason Bekina boots are so comfortable is that they are made from polyurethane, not rubber. Polyurethane is 30% lighter than rubber or PVC. A further feature is that the Steplite-X model was developed especially for the wider-than-standard-European feet of antipodean customers.

Durability
Tests have proven that boots made of polyurethane last up to three times longer than rubber or PVC boots (when used in similar circumstances). Our trial-users of Bekina boots reported wear periods of up to 12 months in circumstances where they considered 3-4 months satisfactory from rubber boots.
 
Slip Resistance
Bekina boots comply with the top ISO standard of ‘SRC’ (Slip Resistancy Coefficient). This standard is achieved by successful testing on ceramic tiles wetted with 0.5% SLS solution and steel with 90% glycerine. This success is due to the inherent grip-ability of polyurethane, and the design of the Bekina treads.
 
Insulation
As polyurethane is a foamed material it contains air bubbles throughout. These act like any
foamed insulation material to reduce temperature conductivity. Our Bekina Steplite-X boots will be comfortable in all Australasian farming temperatures and conditions. These same insulation properties also mean Bekina boots do not sweat as rubber boots do, in warm weather.
 
POLYURETHANE
Polyurethane is a synthetic, foamed material. It is formed from two ingredients which are extruded together with an air bubble structure This ‘foam’ structure gives Bekina boots their
 lightness and insulation properties. Urethane is an extremely hard-wearing material. Boots
 made from polyurethane last about three times longer than regular rubber or PVC boots.

boots. As Bekina developed their manufacturing and marketing, they moved on to pioneering the moulding of polyurethane boots. This is the new way to go in brooding. Safer and more healthy for the chicks than light bulbs and heat lamps. Here at Appletons this is the way we now raise all our chicks. We are so impressed by this low cost, new technology we have sourced a supply and are delighted to offer our customers this quality product from Europe.
Size: 300mm x 300mm, comes with a NZ plug  - just unpack, assemble, plug in and away you go. The 300mm square size will easily keep up to 30 chicks warm. At 25 Watt much more economical and safer than a light bulb. Providing heat by this method means than the heat source is just above the chicks just like their mother would be. Chicks also get to experience dark and light and do better as they get a good nights sleep.  Also easy to clean. Comes with a regulator so you can control output. All up a fantastic little brooder!

We also have the 400mm by 500mm size available some with regulators and some without. Please note the one in the photo is a 400mm x 400mm. It shows how we use them in our brooder boxes. Chick Mat is essential if you are hatching in incubators or raising chicks in brooder boxes.

We use chick mat in our brooder boxes for the first 3 to 5 days. It helps prevent splays and gives th eday olds a firm surface to grip. Perfect if you are hatching pheasant, partridge, guinea fowl and chickens. We also use chick mat in our incubators during the hatching stage to stop eggs rolling around during the hatch.

Lots of lovely untreated wood shavings to use in your chicken coop or hen house.
Also ideal for raising chicks and in nest boxes. We recommend the use of wood shavings in a deep litter bed system. Deep litter is a term used to describe the floor of a chook house where loose dry material  (wood shavings) are used. If mixed with chicken manure and and additional dry litter as required will not need removing for 6 to 12 months. If looked after deep litter has no smell and ends up as beautiful compost (with no added weeds!) We do not recommend the use of hay or staw in a deep bed litter system as we find it does not absorb as much and carries mould and fungi spores which soon affect the birds and humans lungs.
Wood shavings are available in a large bag.

We use POST HASTE COURIERS as out national courier. We find them reliable and they offer us a very good service.
If sending hatching eggs we prefer to use the courier. Eggs are couriered using the POSTHASTE two day service on a monday/tuesday allowing for ample time for delivery prior to the weekend to avoid parcels sitting idle in depots.
Courier to city address will be app. $15 for up to 2 dozen eggs.
Courier to rural address will be app. $20 and takes an extra day.
As there are many variables for incubating eggs and their transportation to you we cannot guarantee fertility and hatch rate. We do our very best to send out fresh, clean, fertile eggs packaged with extreme care in sturdy, good sized boxes.

Most of our hen houses and chicken coops are build KITSET and can be flat packed for shipping. We use local and national freight companies to transport these nationwide. Please feel free to ask for a freight price to a town /depot near you. We can deliver your hen house or chicken coop for a small fee if you are local to the Nelson Bays Area. With local delivery we can deliver your hen house or coop already assembled and ready to go.
