    Poultry Safeguard Concentrate | Appletons

Our best selling coop cleaner. Voted the best solution to keep on top of Red Mite! Red mites reproduce rapidly. These nasty bugs don’t live on your chickens but hide in the framework of your coop, perches and nest boxes, only coming out at night to feed on the blood of your birds. The result is your chickens become stressed, suffering anaemia, reducing egg production and even death if not treated. Red mites are also very difficult to control, so Appletons have developed Poultry Safeguard which dissolves mites on contact. It’s also a powerful disinfectant, killing bacteria, viruses and odour in coops.Appletons Poultry Safeguard is New Zealand made and best of all it is economical. It is a concentrate which you mix with water as you need it - you get approximately 50 litres of maintenance solution from our 1-litre bottles and as a mite treatment approximately 20 litres. Making it more cost-effective when compared to other similar available products.Poultry Safeguard is a non-toxic blend of high foaming surfactants, sequestrates and alkaline builders and quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) which effectively dissolves waxy accumulations and is effective against a range of microbes (including Avian Influenza Virus, Avian Infectious Bronchitis and Newcastle’s disease) and micro-organisms including bacteria, mildew, moulds and fungi. There is no egg withholding period which is great as you can let your hens back in to lay.The ultimate solution to a mite-free hen house. No other cleaner does the job better! Available in 500ml, 1L and 5L Concentrate bottles

  • Appletons Pour On Drench 30ml dropper bottle Pour-on Drench Appletons

    Pour-on Drench 30ml

    64 reviews

Very effective for treating poultry lice. Used with great results in poultry circles as a reliable treatment for most internal and external parasites. Generally used for the treatment of poultry lice and scaly leg mite, but will also kill any red mites that try to suck off your chicken. It is a topical treatment applied directly to the skin of the bird. It is approved for use on other farm animals but has not been officially approved for use on poultry, hence the recommended 10 day withholding period for eggs (and 63 in NZ for meat). This little bottle will treat a good number of birds.Dosage rate is 0.1ml per 1kg live body weight.Approximately 60 treatments. (calculated on 60 brown shavers that weigh 2.5kg each )Available in a dropper bottle with a nozzle and cap for handy dosing. Helpful Notes. What are you treating your birds for? Worms?  We recommend using an approved wormer for treating worms in poultry. Our recommended choice for laying birds is Flubenol, as there is no withholding period for eggs. If treating birds that are not laying then Aviverm is easier to dose. Please note with Aviverm, there is an 8-day withholding period for egg consumption. If using pour-on drench, please note it does not kill all types of internal worms. We recommend following up treatment within the prepatent period of the particular worm you are treating for. Please read our informative blog on working chickens. Lice? If you are treating for external parasites, eg, a one-off treatment usually does the trick; however, if not all birds are treated and the hen house is not thoroughly cleaned (disinfected), then birds can reinfest quickly. For best practice, we recommend checking birds after 7 to 10 days and repeating the treatment as lice eggs can hatch in this period of time. We generally inspect (physical health check) our birds 2 to 4 times a year (usually when the seasons change) and treat them accordingly for lice. We find that the pour-on drench, when dosed correctly, works brilliantly for lice control.  Read our informative blog on treating lice. Important Considerations. Off-Label Use: Cydectin is approved for use in other farm animals like cattle and sheep, but does not have an official, scientifically tested withholding period for poultry specific to the label. The recommended periods for poultry are derived from New Zealand's default withholding periods for unregistered veterinary medicines in birds ensuring human food safety. Active Ingredient Accumulation: The active ingredient, moxidectin, is highly lipophilic (fat-loving) and accumulates in fatty tissues, including the egg yolk, which causes residues to persist for a longer period. Correct Dosage: It is crucial to use the correct dosage (applied to the skin, such as under the wing or on the back of the neck)  Egg Management: Eggs laid during the withholding period should not be eaten or fed back to the flock, as this can reintroduce the chemical into the birds' systems and prolong the withdrawal period. They can, however, be used for incubation. Don’t feed them to other animals, such as dogs, as residues may affect them too. Poison. Keep away from children. Please note this is a liquid and we cannot slip it into a courier satchel - it needs to be sent in a box.

  • Large Step On Feeder 12kg | Appletons Appletons Large Step On Feeder for Laying Hens

Large Step On Feeder 12kg | Appletons

    53 reviews

Our best selling auto feeder! Stop feeding the sparrows, rats and mice and keep your chicken feed clean 😊 Benefits: For chook keepers that keep 4 to 20 hens -however, the feeder will need to be topped up more regularly if you keep more hens. Remember an average laying hen eats app. 130 - 140g of layer pellets a day so the consumption vs when you need to fill it up can be calculated. Suitable for all standard sized birds (brown shavers and hylines), heavy breeds and some of the larger light breeds (leghorns). This brilliant step-on auto chicken feeder has a large capacity and holds approximately 12kg. Hens are foragers and do best eating little and often throughout the day so feed on demand works best. Reduces hierarchy in flocks ensuring all birds get enough feed which results in happy hens and better egg production. Vermin-proof: Keeps out rats, mice and sparrows ensuring your poultry feed is not contaminated. Keeps feed clean and helps to reduce the worm burden. Ideal for busy people that are not always home early in the morning and late afternoon to feed their hens and those of us that go away for weekends. Reduces feed wastage and saves money. Open feeders can lose up to 40% of feed to sparrows and other birds. NZ made - supporting local NZ business The unit is made from aluminium with alloy rivets, plated steel hinges, nuts and bolts so it keeps working in adverse weather. Includes our very own Appletons training instructions which are clear and easy to follow. Training is very important and not to be rushed or shortened. Chickens need to be POL (point of lay) 18+ weeks of age and older for training. Dimensions: App. 51cm (long) x 46cm (wide) x 22cm (height) What Size is Best? The large step on feeder or mini step on feeder? The large size is more suitable for a larger walk-in hen house especially if you plan to position the feeder inside the hen house or outside in the poultry run (protected from the weather) where there is plenty of space. The large step on is twice as wide as the mini and therefore offers more hens the opportunity to feed at once (+ it also holds more food.) The mini 6kg version is perfect for smaller flocks living in movable chicken coops where the footprint of the coop is small and space is a premium. Using two mini step on feeders in a larger flock (instead of one large one) can work well as two feeding stations can dissipate any possible dominance over the feeder by a bossy hen/s and also help when introducing new birds. "At one stage we were feeding all the neighbourhood sparrows, mice and rats and it was costing us a fortune. When we moved to these step-on feeders (now 16 years ago!) and got the chooks trained to use them our feed bill was considerably reduced and the feed now stays clean and is no longer contaminated with mouse/sparrow droppings. Plus our chook houses are also now free of sparrow droppings and easier to keep clean reducing risk from contamination like salmonella and other diseases carried by the wild birds and rodents. Definitely worth the investment. It will pay for itself in no time!" Please note this size feeder is not suitable for bantams, we do have the Appletons Bantam Step On Feeder for smaller sized birds. Our Appletons Mini Step On Feeder is identical to our Large Step On Feeder but only half the width - ideal if you have a smaller flock of 3 to 5 standard-sized hens and/or need to fit it in a small run/coop.

  • Appletons De-Mite Powder available in 350g, 1kg, 5kg De-Mite Powder Appletons

    De-Mite Powder | Appletons

    79 reviews

For long-lasting residual control of Red Mite and other external parasites in poultry housing. Dust on perches and nesting areas in poultry houses. The mites will crawl through the powder to reach the birds. The powder scratches the red mites waxy outer covering of their exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate and die slowly. This product is 100% natural, DE-based, and can be used safely in organic systems. There is no withholding period for meat or eggs. We recommend first sanitising the hen house with Poultry Safeguard Concentrate or Smite Concentrate or Poultry Shield and when surfaces are dry apply the Appletons De-Mite Powder. Use hand application (wear a glove!) or our handy powder applicator and sprinkle/rub on perches and in nest box bedding. Apply to floor litter only if birds huddle/sleep on the floor at night. Dust Appletons De-Mite Powder into all the corners and timber joins around the house, perches, nest boxes. We apply weekly to our hen houses and coops to keep on top of the mites. • Flubenol 5% - Poultry and Pig Wormer Flubenol 5% approved wormer

Flubenol 5% | Poultry and Pig Wormer

    74 reviews

This broad-spectrum wormer has no withholding period for eggs.  Yes, you can keep eating the eggs! 😊 Flubenol™ 5% contains flubendazole, a broad-spectrum anthelmintic with high efficacy against all gastrointestinal worm species that commonly occur in poultry. It is effective against roundworms (Ascaridia galli, Heterakis gallinarum, Capillaria spp., Amidostomum anseris and Trichostrongylus tenuis), gapeworm (Syngamus trachea) and tapeworms (Raillietina sp.). Registered in New Zealand for use on poultry.  Dosage  Formulated to use in commercial feed production, but can be used to treat smaller backyard poultry flocks.  To treat your flock, mix the powder thoroughly into the dry feed and feed it for flock for seven consecutive days. It needs to be well mixed through the pellets or dry mash. (Do not just sprinkle on top!)  0.6 grams/kg Flubenol 5% (standard dose) (30ppm active ingredient) 1.2 grams/kg Flubenol 5% (for tapeworm treatment) (60ppm active ingredient) Flubenol 5% can be used to treat chickens, turkeys, geese, partridges and pheasants. Do not use this product to treat pigeons or parrots. Important | Get dosage correct & mix well 1) Follow the product instructions exactly (species, dose, method, frequency)2) Mix well (Uneven distribution can reduce effectiveness) Directions for Use: Calculate what 1 hen eats daily (look on the label on your feed sack) Count the number of hens in your flock  (treat everyone) Multiply the number of hens by the daily ration for one hen This total indicates how much feed your flock eats in a day Multiply this number by seven (7 days of treatment) This total is the amount of feed you need to medicate for the treatment period Dose exactly - 0.6 grams Flubenol 5% to every 1kg of feed  Empty and clean all feeders Feed medicated feed for 7 consecutive days On the eighth day, remove any medicated feed and empty Replace with non-medicated, fresh feed For best results, we recommend sanitising/ cleaning your hen house at the same time using Poultry Safeguard. For more info on deworming your flock read here. Repeat Treatment within the PPP of the Identified Worm Follow-up TreatmentAll poultry worms have a life cycle of between 2 to 7 weeks. It is critical to break this life cycle, so a repeat treatment should be administered within the pre-patent period of the worm (PPP). The PPP is the time period in days from worm egg ingestion by the chicken until the adult worm starts producing eggs in the chicken and sheds these eggs into the environment. When dealing with specific problem worm species, we always consider the PPP of the worm in question, because you want to keep your Flubenol treatment interval just shorter than this time period, so that you effectively prevent further contamination of the environment with worm eggs, and thereby continue the infective cycle. So, for instance, with a normal large roundworm (Ascarid) infection, a longer treatment interval of around 5-6 weeks is what we suggest (the life cycle or PPP of this worm species is the longest of all the commonly found poultry worms). However, with Gapeworm, the PPP is around 2-3 weeks. So, to effectively control the burden for this worm species, we recommend following up with another treatment 2 weeks after completion of the first. We recommend doing a follow-up treatment of Flubenol within the PPP for the worm you are treating. The good news is no withholding period for eggs and meat for poultry. Symptoms following overdosing: Flubenol 5% is non-toxic; even considerable overdosing does not produce side effects.  In poultry, even three times the highest dose for seven days had no negative effects on egg production, egg quality, hatching results and growth of offspring.Treatment with Flubenol can only be effective if the hygiene of pig pens and poultry housing is observed. Available in a 600g tub and in smaller sachets for treating smaller flocks. Treatment for Pigs Flubenol 5% is effective against the mature and immature larvae and eggs of the following species of worm: Large Roundworm, Red Stomach Worm, Nodular Worm Lungworm, Threadworm and Whipworm. Individual treatment: (Single administration)Add 1 g of Flubenol for each 10 kg bodyweight onto the finished feed. (This is equivalent to 5 mg of flubendazole per one kg bodyweight). One 13 g measuring spoon treats one 130 kg sow. An easy way of administering the dose is to add it to a buttered bread roll and feed it to your pig. Treat twice a year unless recommended otherwise by your veterinary surgeon.  Pigs brought onto the premises should be treated on arrival and before mixing with other animals.  Animals must not be slaughtered for human consumption within 7 days of treatment.

  • Scaly Leg Spray 500ml Poultry Leg Spray for scaly leg mite

    Scaly Leg Spray 500ml

    54 reviews

Very effective organic treatment for poultry scaly leg mite. This treatment is totally organic. A mixture of Cottonseed Oil and Eucalyptus. Instructions.Spray oil on legs, avoiding the feathers. Saturate the affected areas.  "Poultry Leg Spray" works by suffocation. Gently massage the legs, ensuring all areas are covered. Repeat every 3-4 days for 3 to 4 weeks.  Do not pick off the scale debris, as it can cause bleeding. The chickens will help by pecking the debris off the leg themselves. In cases where a chicken's scales are lost, they will not regrow.  Even if your other chickens do not have signs of Scaly Leg Mites, it is recommended that you treat them as well so that these Scaly Leg Mites do not establish themselves in your flock. It is contagious. Check their legs regularly throughout the year. There is no egg-withholding period.  Cleanliness and sanitary measures around the chicken coop are in order because the mites can live for long periods in cracks and crevices without feed and water. Please store the bottle at room temperature and best used when the contents is warm. If it is too cold, the liquid will not move through the sprayer. Do Your Chickens Have Scaly Leg Mite?Scaly legs on chickens are caused by a parasitic mite (Knemidocoptes mutans) that burrow under the scales on the chicken's legs. The damaged tissue weeps, which is what these mites feed on. Signs and Symptoms. Raised scales on the legs. Crusty legs. Lameness (severe cases). Can also be found on the comb and wattles. In the early stages of the infection, the chicken will have mild irritation. It takes several months of infection before the scales on the legs start to lift. Repeat application is recommended. You should treat all of your birds even if only one bird has scaly legs, as scaly leg mite is very contagious and it is highly likely that all of your birds will have the mite.Scaly foot is a bird ailment that is common among caged birds and also affects many other bird species. It is caused by mites in the genus Knemidocoptes which burrow into the bird's flesh. The tunnels made by the mites within the skin cause dermatitis and scaly lesions. Scaly face is caused by the same mite responsible for scaly foot and other related mites cause depluming. The condition is transmitted from one bird to another by direct prolonged contact.

  • Wood Shavings | Bedding Wood Shavings | Bedding

    Wood Shavings | Bedding

    50 reviews

Reap the benefits of using untreated wood shavings. Also ideal for raising chicks and in nest boxes. We recommend the use of wood shavings in a deep litter bed system. Shavings are better than wood chip or sawdust as shavings offer nice curls of timber rather than dust or chips. Deep litter is a term used to describe the floor of a chook house where loose dry material (wood shavings) are used. If mixed with chicken manure and additional dry litter as required, deep litter will not need removing for 6 to 12 months. If looked after, deep litter has no smell and ends up as beautiful compost (with no added weeds!) We do not recommend the use of hay or straw in a deep bed litter system. It is not as effective as wood shavings in absorbing moisture and carries possible mould and fungi spores which can affect the respiratory health of pets (and humans!) • Poultry Shell Grit | Appletons Shell Grit for poultry by Appletons

    Poultry Shell Grit | Appletons

    19 reviews

Yes, we recommend giving shell grit to your hens! We feed out Weston Layer pellets to our laying birds and the soluble calcium levels in this commercial feed are adequate for eggs production with sound shells. However for those birds that are in enclosed runs and do not have access to large areas of free-range we provide shell grit separately. Shell grit has 3 benefits over the soluble limestone they add in the feed. The hard shell bits act as teeth in the gizzard to assist in grinding up the feed and aids digestion. The intake of calcium from the shells helps strengthen the shell of the chicken eggs. Plus trace elements from the sea will be beneficial to their diet At Appletons we fill a small pot planter (or an old pottery dish with a hole in it) secured by a wire stake in the ground (so the birds don't knock it over!) with our fine shell grit. Don't forget to line it with some weed mat to contain the grit so it does not all wash out!   Available in a 2kg or a 5kg bag.

  • Feed-o-matic treadle feeder Olba Feed-o-matic Chicken Feeder

    Feed-o-matic Treadle Feeder | Olba

    69 reviews

Suitable for all chicken breeds. 4 sizes to suit your requirements: 5kg, 8kg, 12kg and a 20kg capacity Benefits: The unique treadle operation of this feeder will ensure your poultry has all-day access to their favourite feed.   No risk of injury with the unique treadle system which allows your poultry to walk on to the ramp which activates an inwards opening trap door, giving free access to their feed. The operating system is almost silent which will not spook extra timid poultry.  The feeder can be operated by all poultry big and small from the smallest of bantams to the largest of heavy breeds. The adjustable weight of the pedal allows adjustments for birds as little as 250 grams to open, if this is too light, then simply adjust to one of the 5 different settings.  Built from robust heavy gauge galvanised steel and mouse-proof. They will also work well to keep the sparrow and other wild birds out too. Please note trough and treadle are plastic and not rat proof. For best results, we recommend using this feeder undercover and out of the weather.   Useful Info on Training Training takes approximately a week. We recommend not feeding the chooks anywhere else or out of any other feeders whilst in training so they learn to use their new feeder. Try placing a stone on the treadle for the first 3 or 4 days so they learn where the food is, then remove the weight and let them learn to stand on the treadle to expose the feed. They will quickly get the hang of it. To keep the best flow into the feed trough we recommend using a small even-sized pellet in these feeders like the Weston layer pellets. Dry mash due to its powdery consistency will require regular cleaning out to keep the flow moving. Do not use feeds that contains molasses, neither are they good for your hens they also clog the feeder eg: Chook Tucker. Please note the slot at the base of the hopper can be adjusted to regulate the flow of feed. We recommend letting your chooks empty it regularly so the fine dust that builds up with both pellets and mash can be cleaned out. Dimensions (approximate) :5kg - 260mm wide x 400mm high x 480mm deep - including treadle8kg - 275mm wide x 470mm high x 480mm deep - including treadle12kg - 345mm wide x 495mm high x 480mm deep - including treadle20kg - 345mm wide x 660mm high x 480mm deep - including treadle The two smaller sizes are narrower across the front (26cm and 27.5cm) only allowing 1 hen to feed at a time. The two larger sizes are wider (both 34.5cm) which will allow 1 very large hen or two standard sized hens (brown shavers) to feed at the same time. Minor assembly required upon delivery. Please follow instructions below for installing the optional rat guard.  Download Assembly Manual

We recommend every 4 to 12 weeks. Please wear a nose and mouth protector when undertaking this job due to all the fine dander and dust particles which could carry all sorts of nasty bacteria or fungi. We use a wide-mouthed shovel brush, pan, paint scraper and big plastic bin to clean our houses. Remove the bulk of litter using the shovel and then sweep out the rest with a brush and pan and then using a scrapper remove any necessary stubborn bits. Sweep out. Mix up Poultry Safeguard Concentrate to the correct dilution (see instructions on the bottle) and spray onto dry timbers. For residual red mite control, we recommend using Appletons De-Mite Powder in your hen house on a regular basis. If your hen house smells bad and is attracting flies then something is not working. A chook house should have no odour and be a sweet-smelling home for your chooks. How to Clean an Omlet Chicken CoopEmpty the dropping tray out regularly (daily if you prefer or weekly) and replace with a thin layer of fresh wood shavings. Once a month we recommend cleaning roosting bars and droppings tray with cleaning out the nest box. Washing the plastic trays and bars is recommended. This is a good time to check for red mite and other creepy crawlies! For residual control dust roosting bars, perch rails and nest box bedding with Appletons De-Mite Powder. Every 3 to 6 months we recommend giving your eglu a thorough clean from top to toe. We use a water blaster for this set on a wide-angle nozzle.  Poultry Safeguard used at is maintenance dose works well. Please rinse well with potable water. Your Egu should look as good as new after its clean!

Our recommended choice. These are full, natural size hens eggs. 70mm long x 46mm in diameter. Painted over the wood for a very smooth finish and are most consistent to real eggs. Sold in pairs. These are the brood or fake eggs we like to use at Appletons. Keep a pair in the nest box to encourage your hens where to lay. We recommend investing in some false eggs. • Mini Step On Feeder 6kg | Appletons Appletons Mini Step On Feeder 6kg

Mini Step On Feeder 6kg | Appletons

    14 reviews

Space-saver auto feeder! Best step on feeder for small spaces. If space is a premium in the chicken coop then this mini feeder is the one for you 😊 The best thing about the Appletons MINI Step On Feeder is that it takes up ONLY half the space of the Appletons Large Step On Feeder and does the same job. Benefits: For chook keepers with 3 to 4 hens. Remember an average laying hen eats app. 130 - 140g of layer pellets a day so the consumption vs when you need to fill it  Suitable for all standard sized birds (brown shavers and hylines), heavy breeds and some larger light breeds (leghorns.) This brilliant step-on auto chicken feeder holds approximately 6kg. Training is very important and best not to be rushed or shortened.  Chickens need to be POL (point of lay) 18+ weeks of age and older for training. Dimensions: app. 30cm (long) x 46cm (wide) x 22cm (height) (Height when fully open is 40cm) What Size is Best? The large step on feeder or mini (space saver) step on feeder? The perfect solution for those that keep 3 to 4 chooks in a mobile chicken coop like the Ultimate Coop on Wheels or the Eglu Cube Chicken Coop. "At one stage we were feeding all the neighborhood sparrows, mice and rats and it was costing us a fortune. It will pay for itself in no time!" Fionna Appleton

This size feeder is perfect for chicks from 3+ weeks if you have the space in the brooder,Also perfect for feeding adult bantams where the run or coop is fully enclosed (invest in a Bantam Step On feeder if your bantams free-range) or for a mother hen with chicks. • Coxiprol Solution 1L and 250mL variants Coxiprol Solution anti-coccidial treatment

    Coxiprol Solution

    17 reviews

Coxiprol is essential to have handy when raising young birds. EXP 11/2027 Coccidiosis is an intestinal parasite that exists just about everywhere. It can take a heavy toll on chicks, starting from about three weeks of age. The parasite multiplies greatly in the gut of the chick, and vast numbers of "oocysts" (think of them as eggs) come out in the manure. Chicks raised on litter floors scratch and peck at the litter, looking for food, and become infected. The explosive multiplication of the coccidia can lead to dead, stunted, and sick chicks. Chicks that are exposed to only low levels of coccidia become immune without becoming sick. Control is achieved by breaking the reproductive cycle. Chicks raised on wire floors don't get coccidiosis because they don't have enough contact with the manure. Chicks raised on free-range from a very early age tend not to get it because they also don't have enough exposure. Chicks raised on old litter (used for at least six months) tend not to get it because the litter eventually harbours microscopic creatures that eat coccidia. Medicated chick starter contains drugs that suppress coccidia directly. Wet litter, crowding, intermittent feeding, and any type of stress tend to increase coccidiosis. If the feeders are empty, the chicks will spend more time nosing around in the litter. If you have an outbreak of coccidiosis, - the first signs are usually visible as ‘bloody’ poop. A must-have if hatching and raising your own chicks! Read our blog on CoccidiosisTreating CoccidiosisAnticoccidial drugs are very effective. The danger zone is usually around 3 to 7 weeks. Keep chicks on a crumble that contains low levels of coccidiostat. With a serious outbreak, you need to put a coccidiostat in the water, since sick chicks that will not eat will still drink. It is worth having an anticoccidial drug-like Coxiprol on hand as if caught earlier enough and treated the chicks bounce back quickly. Available in a 250ml and a 1L bottle.
