New Zealand's 'common' pheasant
Know as the common pheasant, the ringneck pheasant is the striking bird we see out in the paddocks or on the roadside. It is a well-known gamebird and one of the world's most hunted birds. It is also common on game farms where it is commercially bred to be mass released and shot. The males body plumage is barred bright gold and brown with green, purple and white markings. The head is bottle green with a small crest and distinctive red wattles and white neck band. The female is much less impressive with a duller mottled brown plumage all over. Juvenile birds have the appearance of the female with a shorter tail until young males begin to grow characteristic bright feathers on the breast, head and back at about 10 weeks after hatching. The breeding season runs from end September through to just after Christmas. The hens lay small greenish brown coloured eggs and each hen can lay between 50 to 60 eggs a season if she is in good breeding order. Last season we released all our ringneck breeding stock due to time constraints and now just enjoy watching them free range around our place.

Just a note to say that I have picked up the hens and got them home. They are beautiful and so well packaged. Mainfreight staff was very impressed, as was I. I am trying to coax them out of the box and into their new house but they are happy in the box! I will have to give them a push I think! Again, very many thanks to everyone involved with this purchase.

We are very happy with this product. We wish we had heard about it sooner, because although the older girls are now not pecking the younger girls, they have gotten into the habit of chasing and the young girls, running. We are sure it will calm down once they realise that they are not going to get plucked. Just a point - got some kick-back spray into my face and even I don't want to peck at the chickens - LOL. Regards, Jeanette

This is the 3rd time of buying products from Appletons. Their website is pretty easy to use and the delivery very quick and not overly expensive. I have purchased chicken food and an Omlet fence both of which I am very satisfied with. And finally if you have to have a chat with them, they are really friendly and obliging. Full Marks Appletons!
